Athens Sunset Walking Tour up Lycabettus Hill

Athens does sunrise beautifully, but sunset is when the whole city performs. The marble of the Acropolis catches the last of the light and glows. The sprawl of white buildings turns pink, then amber, then a sea of lights. And the single best seat in the house is the summit of Lycabettus Hill, the highest point in central Athens.

This is a sunset walking tour built around that moment. Rather than a bus dropping you at a crowded viewpoint, you walk up the rugged trail through the pines with me, and we time it so you're on top 20 to 30 minutes before the sun drops. It runs as the afternoon session of my Conquer Lycabettus climb, capped at seven people, so it never feels like a tour.

After 17 years of leading small-group walks up these hills, I know exactly where to stand and when the light peaks. You just have to show up with a camera and decent shoes.

We meet in the late afternoon at the Vallianeio Megaron on Panepistimiou, right outside Panepistimio metro, and walk up through the smart streets of Kolonaki to the base of the hill. From there the trail switchbacks up through pine forest, gaining 220 metres over a route that's rugged enough to feel like a proper climb but never brutal. It's about 4.4 km round trip and most people manage it comfortably in around 1.5 hours including all the time we spend at the top.

Along the way I point out the things you'd walk straight past on your own: the little side trails, the neighbourhood stories, the best of the photo spots in Athens as the light starts to turn. If anyone's legs give out, there's a funicular from the top of Kolonaki that skips the steepest part, but walking up is where the experience is.

The summit works year-round, but the experience shifts with the season. Spring and autumn are the sweet spot: mild temperatures for the climb, clear air, and a sunset around 6:30 to 8pm that doesn't require a very late finish. The hillsides are green in spring and the light is soft and golden.

In high summer the sun doesn't set until nearly 8:45pm, so the walk starts later and the summit stays warm and pleasant well into the evening, perfect for lingering. In winter the sunset comes early, around 5:15 to 5:30pm, which makes it an easy afternoon outing, though you'll want that extra layer once the sun's gone. Whatever the month, I time the start so you're always on top before the light peaks.
